AI-driven Education and Research in Shipping
A highlight of the participation of the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus in Posidonia 2026 was the organization, in the main hall of Posidonia, of the event on the theme of AI-driven Education and Research in Shipping.
In the packed Posidonia Conference Center, participants had the opportunity to attend interesting speeches and a rich dialogue on how Artificial Intelligence is shaping the framework for education and research in shipping. The event began with the greeting of the Rector of the University, Professor Michael Sfakianakis, and the short speech of the President of the Department of Maritime Studies, Professor Ioannis Theotokas, on the priorities and planning of the Department in the field of international collaborations. This was followed by a speech by the guest speaker, Professor Martin Jes Iversen, Executive Advisor for International Affairs at Copenhagen Business School, on the topic of Digitalization in Shipping and how it will affect all aspects of the industry’s operations.
This was followed by a discussion moderated by the Department’s Professor, Alexandros Artikis, in which the following participated: Konstantina Beretta (Director of the Kpler Research Laboratory), Karolos Geroulanos (Plotarchis, First Engineer P.N. and PhD candidate of the Department), Andreas Kouvaras (Vice President of Product of VesselFront and PhD candidate of the Department), Ioannis Lagoudis (Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Department) and Vasilios Balambanos (Software Systems Architect and Chief Engineer of MTIS). Professor Alexandros Artikis presented the Department’s approach to these specific fields, as well as projects that are being implemented or have been implemented. He then posed questions to the panel members, who presented the innovative approaches and discussed how artificial intelligence is shaping the field for implementing research and educational initiatives.
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session for the speakers.
