Educational Visit to the Hellenic Maritime Heritage Park

As part of the course ‘Maritime Economic History’, students of the Department of Maritime Studies participated in an educational visit to the Hellenic Maritime Heritage Park at Flisvos Marina on 2 June.

During the visit, students toured the historic battleship AVEROF, one of the most important symbols of Greece’s modern naval history. The guided tour offered valuable insights into the country’s maritime heritage and the pivotal role of naval power in Greece’s historical development.

The visit was further enriched by the opportunity to explore the submarine PROTEAS, which has only recently been opened to the public. The students were among the first visitors to experience this important addition to the Maritime Heritage Park and to learn about its history, operational capabilities, and service.

A particular highlight of the visit was the guided tour of the submarine by its Commanding Officer. Drawing on his professional experience, he provided students with a unique perspective on life and service aboard a submarine and engaged in a lively discussion, answering numerous questions about naval operations, technology, and leadership at sea.

The visit offered an excellent opportunity to connect classroom learning with firsthand experience, enhancing students’ understanding of Greece’s maritime and naval heritage while illustrating the broader historical significance of shipping and naval power.
