MSc in “Shipping” Educational Trip: Behind the Scenes at Damen Shiprepair Yard
As part of our unforgettable trip to the Netherlands, our students had the privilege of visiting Damen Shiprepair Yard, one of the world’s most renowned shipbuilding and repair facilities!
We were warmly welcomed by the dedicated team at Damen Shipyards and received an insightful presentation on the company’s history, capabilities, and future ambitions by Sales Manager Mr. Oscar van Wees.
After the presentation, our students toured the various docks, observing the complexities of drydocking while following all safety and security protocols. One of the highlights was witnessing the shiprepair of a Greek vessel, bringing a close-to-home connection for many of our students.
A special contribution was made by Prof. Stefanos Chatzinikolaou, a naval architect and part of our delegation, who shared valuable insights into the environmental footprint of shipbuilding and shiprepair. His expertise added another dimension to the discussion, helping students understand the industry’s impact on sustainability and green practices.
A big thank you to the entire team at Damen Shiprepair Yard for their warm hospitality and for offering us this invaluable learning experience! Your dedication and expertise left a lasting impression on our students.
Special thanks to Mr. Pieter Huyskens, Director RD&I, Sustainability Ambassador at Damen, Chair of the Delegates Group and member of the Zero Emission Waterborne Transport Partnership Board of the Waterborne Technology Platform, for making this visit a reality.
This visit was a fantastic opportunity for our future maritime professionals to see firsthand the meticulous work that goes into maintaining and repairing vessels.
But that’s not all! Stay tuned for our final destination!
