The University of Piraeus established the Department of Maritime Studies (D.M.S) in 1989, to bridge the academic gap present in the Greek maritime cluster. The aim of the implementation of this strategic decision has been the provision of academic services of the highest caliber to the local, regional and global maritime community. This aim is achieved via the following objectives:

  • Offering of state-of-the-art theoretical and applied expertise in the fields of ocean transportation, logistics and supply chain management via graduate, postgraduate and executive education programs.
  • Conducting applied research in a variety of disciplines within the maritime studies domain, such as management, environment, marketing, supply chain management, human resource management, strategic management, organizational behavior, finance and accounting, maritime law and more.
  • Provision of advisory and consultancy services customized to the needs of public and private organizations active in the maritime space namely, shipping management companies, ports, financial institutions, suppliers, ministries.
  • Creation of global long-term collaborations at academic and industry level partnering with academic institutions at research and student exchange level and well-established industry players at the internship and career level.

The Department, via its strong ties with the Greek maritime cluster and global maritime industry, offers internship opportunities to its graduate students and unique career opportunities to its graduates. Since its inception, there is a strong and well-connected alumni network active in different sectors of the maritime industry.
