Professor Vasilios Tselentis holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, a postgraduate degree in Biochemistry and a PhD (1984) in Biochemistry from the University of London. He also holds a diploma in Public Health and Epidemiology from the National School of Public Health. His scientific expertise lies in the environmental control of atmospheric and marine pollution, as well as in public health and hygiene.
He began his career as a researcher at the Medical School of the University of Athens in 1986 and his academic career in 1988, as a Lecturer in Hygiene and Epidemiology at the Medical School of the University of Patras. Subsequently, in 1991, he was elected and appointed as Assistant Professor at the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, where he continued his academic career until his retirement in August 2021. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Cardiff University. He was one of the first faculty members of the Department of Maritime Studies and contributed significantly to its development, both in the field of teaching and in the field of research and academic publications on marine environmental protection.
He is a member of the British Biochemical Society, the Hellenic Scientific Society for Environmental Protection and the Hellenic Association of Maritime Economists. He is a certified Environmental Management Systems Inspector by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance and the International Register of Certificated Auditors, while he holds a “Crisis Management and Human Behavior” certification based on STCW 95 from the Aland Maritime Institute and a diploma entitled “The Implications of the International Character of Shipping for Environmental and Safety Management”, from the National Institute for Maritime Research of the Netherlands, in collaboration with ECOMARE, the Green Shipping Award 1999 and the Dutch Ministry of Transport, in 2002.
His career at the Department of Maritime Studies includes a tenure as Assistant Professor from 1991 to 1997, Associate Professor from 1998 to 2009 and Full Professor from 2009 to 2021. From 2002 to 2021, he was Director of the Marine Sciences Laboratory of the University of Piraeus. He served as Director of the Postgraduate Program in Shipping.
