Professor Ernestos Tzannatos graduated (B.Sc.) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Portsmouth UK (1982) and held a postgraduate degree (M.Sc.) in Marine Engineering from University College London – UK (1983). He completed his doctoral thesis (Ph.D.) in Turbomechanics at Cranfield University – UK (1986). During the years 1986-1988, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Imperial College London – UK in the research area of ​​turbocharging of marine diesel engines and in 1989-90 as a Visiting Professor at the Naval Academy.

Since 1991, he served as a faculty member at the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, up to the rank of Professor in the field of Marine Technology. His research interests focused on the management of maritime technology to promote productivity, safety and environmental protection in shipping, with research on human-technology interaction, “clean” fuels and alternative forms of energy, exhaust emissions as well as the analysis, assessment and techno-economic control of accident risks. He had authored many articles in leading international scientific journals and conferences, and participated as leader, principal investigator and research member in various European and national research programs and studies.

He was one of the first faculty members of the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, while his election was a catalyst for maritime studies at the European level, since it signaled the Department’s focus in the area of maritime technology. Prof. Ernestos Tzannatos served as Director of the Postgraduate Program in “Shipping”, Dean of the School of Maritime and Industry (2013-2017), Member of the Senate of the University of Piraeus (2013-2017), Fellow of the British Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and Member of the British Engineering Council (CEng) and the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG). Prof. Ernestos Tzannatos passed away in January 2024.
