M.Sc. in ‘Shipping’ provides theoretical and practical knowledge and skills at a postgraduate level on Maritime and Port Economics, and on Shipping, Ports and Logistics Organization and Management

The Program aims to:

  • Provide advanced multidisciplinary knowledge in interconnected subjects related to the Shipping, Ports, Transport and Logistics industry.
  • Conduct in-depth multidisciplinary research on issues related to the maritime sector.
  • Cultivate the next generation of competent employees who will contribute to the development of the Shipping, Port, Transport and Logistics industries.
  • Provide specialized knowledge at a post-graduate level in the fields of study of the Program, to address the needs of public and private sector executives.

Aniticipated Outcomes Upon successful completion of the Program, graduates should be able to:

Knowledge Possess specialized knowledge at a postgraduate level, focusing on the fields of Port Economics Management and Policy, Shipping, Transport and Logistics, and on cutting-edge issues related to these sectors
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles, theories, methodologies and practices of economics and management, with emphasis on their application in the areas of the M.Sc. program specialization

M.Sc. in “Shipping” commits to provide post graduate students with high quality modern and competitive educational and research programs, fully aligned with the market’ evolution and needs, and sufficiently serve the academic community and society’ demands.   Focusing on this direction, University of Piraeus, M.Sc. in “Shipping”, Department of Maritime Studies delivers a human-centered post graduate program, equal, inclusive, and accessible to all.

Quality Policy of the Post Graduate Program

Quality Policy of the University of Piraeus, M.Sc. in “Shipping”, Department of Maritime Studies is entirely aligned to the Department’, in addition to the Institutional Quality Policy, concentrating on assuring and continuously improving the program’ quality of studies, as also the educational, research and administrative work delivered.

The M.Sc. in “Shipping” principal objectives develop on grounds similar to these set by the institution, and incorporate the following:

  • Focus on people by forging a creative and supporting environment for the program’ faculty members, students, and administrative personnel.
  • Provision of specialized cutting-edge knowledge duly adapted to scientific developments, as also the market’ and society’ needs, and committed to scientific ethics’ principles.
  • Providing the program’ students with university’ education of high level and specialized training.
  • Fortifying the program’ human resources, thus ensuring the conditions for the achievement of the M.Sc. students’ and personnel’ goals.
  • Supporting research and innovation, by placing emphasis on linking applied research with tuition and production.
  • Advocating an outward-looking mindset and internationalization through international networking and collaborations with academic and research institutions, as well as with market operators, to promote and upgrade the program’s activities.

Quality Policy concentrates on the achievement of the institution’ and the Department’s objectives, as also on the program’s individual ones. These objectives dictate certain actions, accompanied by corresponding indicators which allow the program’s implementation’ control and monitoring. the control and monitoring of its implementation. The program’s individual objectives consist of the following:

  • Providing high level theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the areas of Port and Maritime Economics, Shipping Companies’ Management, Ports and Supply Chain.
  • Providing an advanced interdisciplinary knowledge in interconnected subjects related to Port and Maritime Industry, Transports and Supply Chain.
  • Developing in-depth interdisciplinary research in Maritime sectors.
  • Preparation of competent executives, potent to contribute to business’ development in the areas of Port and Maritime Industry, Transports and Supply Chain.
  • Addressing the demand in private sector’ companies and public sector’ entities, for executives with specialized knowledge of post graduate level.
  • Continuously improving the quality of teaching, research work and services delivered, by commitment of the Department’s faculty members, S.T.S. (special teaching staff), S.T.L.S. (special technical laboratory staff), and administrative personnel.
  • Empowering the interconnection and interaction with other agents and maritime cluster’ organizations, at a national and European level.

M.Sc. in “Shipping” quality assurance is established on the close collaboration between the academic and administrative personnel, as well as the program’s external consultants, intending to provide high quality services, so as the program responds both to the international challenges of educational excellence, and to the requirements, the ever-changing environment characterizing the sectors of Shipping, Ports and Supply Chain, creates.

The program is committed to ensure the achievement of the aforementioned objectives by adopting a student-centered, academic and research strategy, focused on a suitable way.

Internal Quality Assurance System (I.Q.A.S.) (Ε.Σ.Δ.Π.)

Quality Assurance Unit (Q.A.U.) (ΜΟ.ΔΙ.Π.), a body operating under the university’s central administration, is responsible for the institution’s internal quality assurance. Procedures of internal evaluation and accreditation for the programs of study delivered by the Department, are subjected to the Department’s Internal Evaluation Group (I.E.G.) (ΟΜ.Ε.Α.) arrangement, schedule, and coordination. I.E.G. is appointed by the Department’s Assembly, bearing, regarding quality procedures, a leading, coordinating and implementing role.

The Internal Quality Assurance System (I.Q.A.S.) (Ε.Σ.Δ.Π.) determines the procedures related to the effective arrangement of the M.Sc. entirety of services, work force management and development, rational management, and utilization of resources, as well as compliance with the Authority for Quality Assurance in Higher Education standards (A.Q.A.H.E.) (Α.ΔΙ.Π). Furthermore, A.Q.A.H.E. stresses the responsibility the institution’s leading authorities retain to effectively apply Quality Assurance System, upholding the academic principles of ethics and discrimination’ prevention.

In the context of M.Sc. in “Shipping”, I.Q.A.S. finds an application field in the program’ administrative services and work force. The M.Sc. aims to achieve an operation of high quality, ceaselessly improving the educational and research work delivered, while, in accordance with international practices, and in particular the ones indicated by the European Higher Education Area, having its services efficiently performed.

The cooperation between the members of the institution’s Q.A.U., the Department’s I.E.G. and the M.Sc. in ‘Shipping’ Coordinating Committee, on an ongoing basis, leads to the implementation of the following basic quality management processes:

  • Quality assurance procedures employed by the international academic community and associate with the benefit for excellent education and commitment for high level research practice.
  • Quality assurance by recruiting academic, research and administrative personnel of a high level.
  • Unremitting motivation and encouragement of students to delve deeper into the knowledge of cutting-edge sectors and the acquisition of skills in modern scientific fields, pertinent to the program’s subjects.
  • Quality system documentation, including quality policy’ definitions and performance indicators’ systematic monitoring.
  • Research, training, and social interaction evaluation, as well as management and support services, assessment.
  • Internal evaluation.

Quality Assurance System Accreditation

The accreditation of the quality assurance system is performed by H.A.H.E. (Hellenic Authority for Higher Education). The accreditation is an external evaluation process, considering specific, predetermined, internationally approved, and harmonized to the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG 2015), qualitative and quantitative criteria and indicators, aiming to continuously improve the quality of services the program, provides.

In the context of this process, Q.A.U. organizes, prepares, and assists the post graduate program, for/during the external evaluation/accreditation time, while at the same time recommends measures of improvement, in accordance with the experts’ feedback and remarks.

The results of the quality assurance strategy pursued, are documented in the external evaluation reports, in the detailed information regarding the program’s quality targeting and program of studies’ learning outcomes, as these are depicted in the M.Sc.’ Study Guide, in post graduate students’ positive evaluations, in complete alignment with European and International Standards (ECTS system), in the admission of the M.Sc. graduates in Greek and international institutions for doctoral studies, and assuredly in their professional development and social progress.

Institutional Quality Policy Framework

  2. At an academic and administrative functioning level, the Institution’s Quality Policy endorses with the foundation’s strategic and operational objectives.
  3. All the academic community members (students, academic and administrative personnel) acknowledge and advocate the Institution’s Quality Policy, participating actively in the Internal Quality Assurance System procedures, where at some cases become involved.
