Ο Στέφανος Χατζηνικολάου είναι Επίκουρος Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Ναυτιλιακών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου Πειραιώς. Είναι απόφοιτος της Σχολής Ναυπηγών Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου, όπου ολοκλήρωσε και τις διδακτορικές του σπουδές. Έχει πολυετή προϋπηρεσία ως ερευνητής μηχανικός σε χρηματοδοτούμενη (από ΕΕ και βιομηχανία) και μη χρηματοδοτούμενη (ακαδημαϊκή) έρευνα. Έχει υπηρετήσει τη ναυτιλιακή βιομηχανία ως σύμβουλος μηχανικός και ως στέλεχος επιχειρήσεων στους τομείς βιομηχανικής έρευνας/ανάπτυξης και επαγγελματικής εκπαίδευσης. Οι περιοχές επαγγελματικού και ακαδημαϊκού ενδιαφέροντος του είναι η ενεργειακή και περιβαλλοντική απόδοση πλοίων, οι βιώσιμες θαλάσσιες μεταφορές, η ναυτική ασφάλεια και ο ανθρώπινος παράγοντας στην ναυτιλία.
